Here at Splendour, we’re committed to efforts that contribute to the betterment of our home at North Byron Parklands. We’ve got a heap of awesome environmental programs in place to help you become a waste and eco-warrior during your time over the festival (and beyond!). Time to step up and be a good environmental civilian, just like our very first 2019 Eco Ambassador Damon Gameau.
Damon is a world-renowned film maker and activist. In 2015 he released his first feature film ‘That Sugar Film’ which became the highest grossing Australian documentary across Australia and New Zealand of all time. His latest film is documentary ‘2040’ looks at what the world could look like in 2040 if all the best solutions that exist today across environment, community, food and design were implemented right now.
Take his lead and follow these simple steps to score major ‘greenie’ points.
Forget the inflatable couches, blow-up unicorns and over-size foam fingers. You don’t need cheap, disposable crap at a music festival….and we don’t want to have to send unnecessary items to landfill afterwards.
Figure out your essentials and leave the rest at home or on the shelves of the discount shop. You’re only here for a few days people.
We believe tents and camping equipment are for life, not just for a festival. Buy forever items…they’ll last longer, keep you warmer and hold up better in the elements. Swipe right to purchase a keeper tent and kindly take it, and all your other stuff home with you when you leave.
If you’ve got any camping items that need repairing during the festival take them to the legends at Green Music Australia and Mullum Cares. They’ll have a marquee set up in the campgrounds ready to stitch, sew and patch any problems with your gear.
We’re picky about plastic. This means plastic water bottles, straws, plastic cutlery, plastic cups, shopping bags and other one-night-stand plastics. We need to see them gone from our waste streams for good.
By doing a few simple things, you can help us reduce plastic at Splendour:
Splendour is teaming up with Globelet to offer reusable cups at #SITG2019! Globelet eliminates single-use cups and bottled water from music festivals and events and gives 100% of the profits to end single-use packaging. Choose to reuse this Splendour!
How it works:
It’s so simple.
Clearly signed and colour coded Waste Collection stations are conveniently located around the Splendour grounds. Throw out your rubbish just like you would at home!
YELLOW BINS – RECYCLING
Are for clean paper, aluminium cans, plastic bottles (but not the lids) and tetra drink cartons.
GREEN BINS – COMPOSTABLE ITEMS
Are for all food scraps, labelled compostable and biodegradable plates and cups, napkins, chopsticks, and tea bags.
RED BINS – GENERAL WASTE & CRAPPY STUFF
Are for nappies, chip and lolly packets and the rest of your waste.
We’re super excited to have B Alternative on board this year. These guys are serious eco-warriors and will be roaming the campground and festival to assist you with everything enviro. Their mission is simple. To recycle all that can be recycled!
They will be working their way through the Splendour campgrounds providing info about our recycling, composting and general waste facilities and handing out 8L compostable bags.
Take your recycling and compost to the B Alternative marquee in the campgrounds and you’ll go into the draw to win a stack of prizes…like VIP tickets to Splendour 2020!!
Please reduce, reuse and recycle at Splendour.
This year our friends at Momentum Collective, Social Futures and Mullum Cares will be accepting non-damaged camping gear (e.g. tents, roll mats, sleeping bags, air mattresses) that can be distributed to people in need. This helps us with the festival clean-up and ensures that items you decide you might not need or use can go to a good cause.
BUT please do not just leave your tent unattended when you depart the campgrounds. There are specic drop off points in the camgroupds so keep an eye our for signs or ask one of our friendly Camp Marshals.
The legendary Splendour tree planting program is back!
Running on Saturday 20 July, between 10am and 1pm, our tree planting will be staffed by some of the finest bush regen crew the north coast has to offer. And, special guest dirtgirl will be joining us …so bring the kids! If you’re keen to get down and dirty to help with the ongoing regen work at North Byron Parklands, please contact us here for more info.
After making their debut in 2014, the best seats in the house are back at Splendour!
Our 246 ground-breaking, eco-friendly composting toilet blocks are dotted in pods throughout the site to improve amenity and freak out the city kids! Designed in Oz, these award-winning toilets support Parkland’s environmental philosophy to manage water cycles (water and waste water) sustainably.

Splendour’s Waste Warriors and Green Team are Environmental Science students that have been recruited to help combat waste at the festival, protect Mother Nature and inform you about the unique ecology of the festival site. Working closely with the legends at B Alternative the Waste Warriors and Green Team will be roaming the festival to make sure everyone is being good environmental citizens.
